I found this episode, was thinking of you guys.
Watch at least up to 14 minutes, 14 seconds
Watch the woman on the left side of the screen when the psychic Brian Shepherd picks up on something.
Doesn't that look real?

New Moon Tonight - May 28
Tonight is Hecate's night.
Tonight, magick/prayers are done to banish negativity, bad habits, etc.
The next full moon is right before Midsummer. These next two weeks will be the most powerful in the year to manifest things of the heart.

GHOSTS
Well, the beginning of it, anyway.
I'm a little under the weather tonight, so I will get much more elaborate soon, but here are two links to get things started:
I chose the above because the ghost hunting team employs scrying.

Clarification on the Readings and Papers
Don't worry about reading things on time, etc. Just enjoy the material and write about it. The due dates are general guidelines to help you from turning everything in at the end of the session. I'm much more concerned that you keep up and gain new knowledge in a safe and exciting environment than with jumping through hoops.
Clarification on the Art Work Assignment
The artwork is just another way to express what you're learning through a different mode of expression.
For example, you might write a poem or a song, or paint a picture or make a witch's broom.
Then you send it to me and if you want, I will share it with the class.
Retort to the Banana Man
I actually learned this from a biologist when i was at Oxford at a conference:

Meet Our Special Guest Lecturer - Heidi Zentz! Teaching TAROT!
Hi, Everyone,
Heidi is a legit witch, a friend of the fae, and I like to say, Oracle. She has been kind enough to grant us special lessons in Tarot!
Tarot Cards are really a tool used for meditation. The idea, unlike palm reading, is to use metaphorical images to tap into our unconcious and subconciojs minds to guide us.
The more you work with your cards, the more amazing it will become.

Spell Crafting - Days of the Week
When planning a spell, you certainly will consider the phases of the moon. Another consideration is what day of the week would best serve your spell?
A love spell is best done on a Friday, or Venus' day, on a waxing or full moon, for example.
Sunday is Ruled by the Sun
The color association is Yellow
The energy is success, power, healing
Monday is Ruled by the Moon
The color association is Silver
The energy is intuitive, purification, faerie magick
Tuesday is Ruled by Mars
The color association is Red
The energy is victory, passion, aggression
Wednesday is Ruled by Mercury
The color association is Violet
The energy is communication, wisdom, study/intellectual pursuits
Thursday is Ruled by Jupiter
The color association is Orange
The energy is prosperity, joy, expansion
Friday is Ruled by Venus
The color association is green and pink
The energy is love, friendship, romance, reconciliation
Saturday is Ruled by Saturn
The color association is Black
The energy is boundaries, endings, obscured matters

About Your Books
Hi,
You should be able to purchase the books for the class at any big store like Barnes and Noble or The Strand.
If not, you can get them very cheaply at:
abebooks.com
amazon.com (used)
The bookstore doesn't have the books because I find they overcharge students for them. However, I have put the order in and the books should be there soon.
I posted the video of the God Delusion in case you don't want to read the book, though there are some great things in the book that are not in the film.
I am very sorry for the trouble, but I hope all will be fine now.
Thanks.

Richard Dawkins
Meet Richard Dawkins. This is the summary of his book, The God Delusion. Dawkins points out that I can believe in the "Flying Teapot." There might be a flying teapot in the sky, and we should worship it, but I can't prove it's there.
Here are some of his videos that are salient to this class:

Tori Amos - 1000 Oceans
This song references the ancient Wiccan belief system about death. The characters are separated by death. Silbury Hill is an actual place in England, near Stonehenge, where our ancestors believed heaven and earth met at the gate of this hill.

These tears I've cried
I've cried 1000 oceans
And if it seems
I'm floating in the darkness
Well, I can't believe that I would keep
Keep you from flying
And I would cry 1000 more
If that's what it takes
To sail you home
Sail you home
Sail you home
I'm aware what the rules are
But you know that I will run
You know that I will follow you
Over silbury hill
Through the solar field
You know that I will follow you
And if I find you
Will you still remeber
Playing at trains
Or does this litte blue ball
Just fade away
Over silbury hill
Through the solar field
You know that I will follow you
I'm aware what the rules are
But you know that I will run
You know that I will follow you
These tears I've cried
I've cried 1000 oceans

Tori Amos: Nautical Twilight
This song is laden with Wiccan references:
http://youtu.be/s7LP3_WHK2Q
Lyrics:
http://youtu.be/s7LP3_WHK2Q
Lyrics:
As the day gave way
To nautical twilight
I turned
My back on
The force of which I was made
I abandoned it
Rupturing the delicate balance
When I left my world for his
Day after day
As my city fades
And is swallowed by his sea
She is boundless
Even breaking on the beach
Every hour commenced
No fusion and fission
Can unify or drive a force to split
He has been possessed
To drink of the spices
From the east by his liquid mistress
Which then pushed me into the lair
Of uranium, she divides time between
Greed and his twin, tyranny
Day after day
Cities all betrayed
And the earth, his songs lay their blade
She is boundless
But by then she has been frayed
As the night gives way
To nautical dawn I can see
I must activate the force of which I'm made
To nautical twilight
I turned
My back on
The force of which I was made
I abandoned it
Rupturing the delicate balance
When I left my world for his
Day after day
As my city fades
And is swallowed by his sea
She is boundless
Even breaking on the beach

Things to Post
Hi, If you want to post videos and recipes, or anything else fun, please do!
Delicious Beltane and Midsummer Pie
Beltaine Cream Pie
Recipe
by Edain McCoy
Prepare and pre-bake a pie
shell and have it ready in the pie dish. The pie filling will be warmed but not
baked.
1 cup whole milk
1 cup rich cream
1/2 cup or one stick of
real butter
3 tablespoons cornstarch
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
ground nutmeg
Melt the butter in a wide
cooking pan.
In a separate bowl slowly
add the milk to the cornstarch making sure it is fully dissolved and absorbed
before adding more milk.
When the cornstarch is
fully blended add this and all the other ingredients, except the vanilla, to
the cooking pan.
Stir constantly over medium
heat until the mixture becomes thick like a pudding. Remove from heat and stir
in the vanilla.
Pour the mixture into the
waiting pie shell and sprinkle with nutmeg.
Chill the pie to set.
(The above recipe for
“Beltaine Cream Pie” is taken from “Witta: An Irish Pagan Tradition“, by Edain McCoy, page 187,

Phases of the Moon
Wicca Lesson One
A prayer is a spell. In both cases one sends her intention to the Universe through words and thoughts.
You will find more about the Wiccan idea of Deity in the Cunningham book. In this post, I am going to explain the relationship of the moon with the Wiccan prayer. This way, you will gain a deeper understanding of the framework as you will be guided to actually work through it.
* * **
The moon cycles, waxing (growing larger), full, waning (becoming smaller), and new/dark (absent).
There are thirteen cycles in a year.
One cycle every 28 days.
Spells are designed to follow the energy of the moon, so that, spells for growth are done as the moon waxes. Spells to energize are most powerful during the full moon (this is also a good time to recharge your tools). Spells to decrease or banish are done during the waning moon and new moon.
This lunar year, 2014, is a very, very powerful one. Three lunar eclipses, several blue moons, and more. (e.g. January 1 was a new moon, January 30 was a new moon. Full moon February 14...)
This is the chart for the Lunar Year, 2014:

Belief Systems
As I post these lectures, I will use italics to suggest blog post or paper ideas.
* * **
Since Wicca is a religion, we must first establish what a belief system is.
And since people are persecuted for being "Witches," in opposition to a dominant religious order, we must understand the power of belief systems.
A belief system represents belief without evidence, or faith.
I can believe in ghosts, but I can't prove they exist.
Faith can be a comforting thing, but it can also be a scapegoat used to excuse unethical behavior.
For example, if I believe that I must kill infidels, then I will murder 3000 innocent Americans.
Below are some examples of the power of belief to commit heinous acts. There are many, many more examples. Please post more examples with a comment.

If I believe that a Witch is among us, I can use that to kill her or him with "impunity."
Here's something happening right now that expresses the danger of a belief system over reason:

What if there is no God? What would make killing wrong?
To start, I could say that if there is no afterlife, then taking another's life would be the worst abomination, as the life I take would be the entirety of the being. Or, raping someone and ruining her or his soul would be the worst abomination.
The reason evidence is so important is that without it, I can inflict punishment or death on another just by having a belief about that person:

In today's Western World, we have inverted victim and perpetrator. We say that 911 was America's fault for its wrongs in the Middle East . Now wait just a minute: isn't that exactly like blaming the woman who wore a miniskirt for getting raped?

Anyone Wants to Meet
Hi,
A few of you have expressed a serious interest in this topic, so if you'd like to meet for tutorials, I'm more than happy to do so.
Would anyone like to meet at Stockton on Tuesday, May 27, 5pm?
Or, an alternate time/place/date?
Respond to this post if so.

Grading
Hello,
This is where I am coming from:
1. I can't imagine not being interested in this material. Therefore, I personally would be reading, writing and discovering on my own all the time if I were you. Actually, I am constantly doing that about what I teach as it is.
2. So, what I'd like to do is have this be an ongoing discussion between us all.
3. I'd like to see you leave blog comments to one another.
4. I'd like to have you write reaction papers to things you've read, any length.
5. I'd love to see some of you become so fascinated by something, e.g. tarot, that you go off on your own and research it further, and then write up a short research paper.
6. I'd be delighted if you created a work of art, music, etc. because you were inspired by something you read or saw. (you could exchange this for four pages of writing).
All of the above can work if the following conditions are met:
a) you are interested in the material
b) you are committed to the course
Having taught for nearly 20 years, I understand that to about half of you that might seem like a lot. I have no illusions, but I'm going for it anyway.
Your assignments for these next weeks be:
50 pages + is the minimum for an A (plus the grades on the assignments)
40 pages + is the minimum for a B
35 pages + is the minimum for a C
Good?

Assignment Clarification - Thank you, Ashley!
Hi, Everyone,
I have a difficult enough time as it is communicating in person, sorry about this "even worse" part with the writing. I'll work on it.
BTW, anytime you want to blog and talk to each other, please do. We have to be at our computers for many weeks, so I figure it would be much more fun if we were emotionally invested in it.
So, especially to the troublemakers: I hope you start some scuffle. Everyone gets emotionally invested in scuffle.
The Assignment:
5 pages means:
3-5 pages on the Sam Harris thing only. What he's talking about is so difficult, I have been trying to wrap my mind around it for a year, now. So, I figured, two pages is ridiculous, and after five pages, you would need much more in-depth study.
2 pages for the list and whatever else I asked for, if anything.
Thank you, Ashley!

First Assignment
1. As soon as you can, please read the first half of the Cunningham book.
2. Consider the importance of intention behind an act. Does it change the meaning of the act (or its result) if it had been executed with intention or as a mistake?
- Write a list of what arguments first come to you.
- (e.g. First and second degree murder must have been made to draw a distinction between intentions, right?) OR
- (e.g. Claiming to be able to punish people based on their "intention," in the creation of hate speech/crimes laws. )("MY crime has a special reason. THAT guy got beat to death for noreason. YOU got beat to death "because..." HIS death was meaningless. But yours was full of special meaning.")
- Watch this link: http://youtu.be/pCofmZlC72g
- Consider what you've heard.
- Write a reaction paper considering the challenge of neuroscience to free will, two pages.
- Now look at the original question again, and this time answer it in paragraph form. It's okay if your reasoning is the same or if it's different. It's the thinking (asking yourself lots of questions) that we're after.
Two pages, Five pages. Due Friday before midnight.
Please email your assignment to me as text in the body of the email and as an attachment.
